Wisdom Teeth Pulled – Dentist Sandy Springs

An oral surgeon or a general dentist can extract wisdom teeth.  Most of the time, we perform the procedure in our Sandy Springs office.  However, there are times when in our best judgement we refer out to one of our participating oral surgeons.  Generally, it’s when we determine you may be at a higher risk for complications.

Patients with infections will be delayed in order to avoid other health related complications.  Because there is evidence of the link between periodontal disease and heart related issues, dental surgery may cause periodontal bacteria in the mouth to enter the bloodstream resulting in infections in other parts of your body.  Usually this can be cleared up by antibiotics before and after surgery.

Wisdom teeth can cause crowding or food pockets which lead to undesired gum infections.  When this is the case, it is often recommended that patients between the ages 17 to 25[1] need the extraction procedure.

As a part of the procedure, the tooth and the surrounding tissue are numbed with a local anesthetic prior to having the extraction.  Some people prefer to use nitrous oxide[2].  In some cases, there is the use of a mild sedation, where the patient is still conscious but truly unaware of the procedure.  It is even possible that you receive general anesthesia.

One of the more notable post procedure recommendations is not to use a straw to drink.  The sucking through the straw may dislodge the blood clot in the socket area and delay the healing process.

Sandy Springs: Affordable Dental Implants

The cost of dental implants may appear high, and therefore, unaffordable to most people.  But not if you consider the beneficial differences, the time involved and the expertise of your specialist.

The range of an dental implant starts around $1,500 up to $1,800.  Anything less may be an indicator that you’re getting an inferior product or one not designed for a particular location in your mouth.  Short term the implant device may appear to be fully functional.  But if we look at the cost and the cost of other materials for dental implants compared to their operational life, the difference may be likened to the difference between Toyo’s and Michelin tires.  Here again you may get what you pay for and the initial cost may appear affordable, but in the  long term you are going to get a better result with respect to how it functions and how long it lasts if your provider installs Michelins.

The real concern for the patient is ‘where and how’ to find inexpensive quality dental implant, and most likely the driving adjective is ‘inexpensive’.  This is a result of the perception by the patient that teeth are utilitarian to their daily life.  That’s really not the case, but to put the cost into perspective let’s examine what goes into the cost of a dental implant.

Different manufacturers put different prices on similar rods made from the same material. Some manufacturers include some kind of an extra charge in the dental implant’s price for their brand name. This is a lot more esoteric and therefore harder to explain.   It’s like trying to explain the difference between Polo and Hanes T-shirts.  However, some of these manufacturers provide lifetime guarantees and replacement for failure.

In our Sandy Springs office our goal to provide a single implant for about the same cost of a 3 unit bridge.  The benefits are 1) preserving the underlying bone structure, 2) a more natural bite and 3) the ability to avoid cutting two healthy teeth to accommodate the bridged tooth.

Dental Implants Success Rates

Dental implants are successful and the best way to replace a lost tooth.  The studies show a five-year success rate of 95 percent for lower jaw implants and 90 percent for upper jaw implants.[1]  The lower back jaw has the highest success rate because of greater bone density.  Given the complexity of the procedure, there are many variables that can play into its success rate.

The factors that impact success are pre-existing health conditions[2] and the location of the missing tooth.

Pre-existing Conditions:

• Smokers[3]
• Diabetes
• Hemophilia
• Immune deficiencies
• Rare instances of chronic bruxism

As I have noted in other articles the value of implants is significant with respect to bone retention and actual functionality, and they are not susceptible to the formation of cavities.  So as long as one engages in good oral hygiene, i.e. brushing, flossing, and regular hygiene procedures, the chances of inflammation or swelling of the tissues surrounding the implant should be avoidable.
