Wisdom Teeth Pulled – Dentist Sandy Springs

tooth extractionAn oral surgeon or a general dentist can extract wisdom teeth.  Most of the time, we perform the procedure in our Sandy Springs office.  However, there are times when in our best judgement we refer out to one of our participating oral surgeons.  Generally, it’s when we determine you may be at a higher risk for complications.

Patients with infections will be delayed in order to avoid other health related complications.  Because there is evidence of the link between periodontal disease and heart related issues, dental surgery may cause periodontal bacteria in the mouth to enter the bloodstream resulting in infections in other parts of your body.  Usually this can be cleared up by antibiotics before and after surgery.

Wisdom teeth can cause crowding or food pockets which lead to undesired gum infections.  When this is the case, it is often recommended that patients between the ages 17 to 25[1] need the extraction procedure.

As a part of the procedure, the tooth and the surrounding tissue are numbed with a local anesthetic prior to having the extraction.  Some people prefer to use nitrous oxide[2].  In some cases, there is the use of a mild sedation, where the patient is still conscious but truly unaware of the procedure.  It is even possible that you receive general anesthesia.

One of the more notable post procedure recommendations is not to use a straw to drink.  The sucking through the straw may dislodge the blood clot in the socket area and delay the healing process.

If you feel you are a candidate for wisdom teeth removal, or we can be of service, please feel free to contact us for a complimentary consultation.

Top 4 Reasons Not to Play Hooky – Dentist Sandy Springs

Hygiene examSure, regular cleanings promote good oral hygiene, but did you know these visits also screen for a multitude of diseases? Getting your teeth cleaned and having your doctor’s exam may not rank up there with an afternoon of golf or a matinee movie, but it may be well worth it for your overall health.

4 really great reasons for your regularly scheduled cleanings:

  1. It’s an opportunity to check for Oral Cancer.

You may or may not realize that you’re screened for oral cancer during your regular dental cleaning but you are.

  1. Your gums are being checked for Gum Disease.

Gum disease is one of the leading causes of adult tooth loss. It can be treated and reversed if diagnosed early.

  1. Your overall health.

Studies have linked heart attacks, diabetes detection and strokes to gum disease associated with poor oral hygiene.  So a trip to see us at least every 6 months could reduce your risk of other serious health issues.

  1. Early detection of Dental Problems.

Without regular check-ups, undetected problems can lead to more serious issues like root canals, gum surgery and tooth extraction.   An ounce of prevention verses a pound of cure.

Check-ups allow us to examine your mouth and keep you on the right path.  If it’s been more than 6 months since your last check up and cleaning, call us to schedule an appointment today.  If we can be of any help or answer any questions please feel free to drop us a line.

Sandy Springs: Affordable Dental Implants

dental-implants2The cost of dental implants may appear high, and therefore, unaffordable to most people.  But not if you consider the beneficial differences, the time involved and the expertise of your specialist.

The cost of an dental implant starts around $1,500 up to $1,800.  Anything less may be an indicator that you’re getting an inferior product or one not designed for a particular location in your mouth.  Short term the implant device may appear to be fully functional.  But if we look at the cost and the cost of other materials for dental implants compared to their operational life, the difference may be likened to the difference between Toyo’s and Michelin tires.  Here again you may get what you pay for and the initial cost may appear affordable, but in the  long term you are going to get a better result with respect to how it functions and how long it lasts if your provider installs Michelins.

The real concern for the patient is ‘where and how’ to find inexpensive quality dental implant, and most likely the driving adjective is ‘inexpensive’.  This is a result of the perception by the patient that teeth are utilitarian to their daily life.  That’s really not the case, but to put the cost into perspective let’s examine what goes into the cost of a dental implant.

Different manufacturers put different prices on similar rods made from the same material. Some manufacturers include some kind of an extra charge in the dental implant’s price for their brand name. This is a lot more esoteric and therefore harder to explain.   It’s like trying to explain the difference between Polo and Hanes T-shirts.  However, some of these manufacturers provide lifetime guarantees and replacement for failure.

In our Sandy Springs office our goal to provide a single implant for about the same cost of a 3 unit bridge.  The benefits are 1) preserving the underlying bone structure, 2) a more natural bite and 3) the ability to avoid cutting two healthy teeth to accommodate the bridged tooth.

We make the effort to do the right thing for our patients.  Please give us a call for your complimentary consultation.

Dental Implants – the Standard of Care

mature womanDental implants are stronger and more durable than restorative alternatives[1].  And from an esthetic standpoint, dental implants look and feel more natural.  And they function better than the alternatives.  They offer a relatively permanent solution to tooth and bone loss. Additionally, implants may be used to support a single crown, a dental bridge or a complete denture.

Procedural advancements provide a larger population than ever for dental implants.[2]  Keep in mind, while a general dentist may perform the crown and bridge restorations, prosthodontists[3] are most often your best choice for the successful completion of this technique sensitive procedure.

If we can ever be of help please don’t hesitate to call so we can answer your questions.  With over 25 years of experience, we provide both in-house implant placement and prosthodontic expertise in their restoration.

Dental Implants Success Rates

dental-implants2Dental implants are successful and the best way to replace a lost tooth.  The studies show a five-year success rate of 95 percent for lower jaw implants and 90 percent for upper jaw implants.[1]  The lower back jaw has the highest success rate because of greater bone density.  Given the complexity of the procedure, there are many variables that can play into its success rate.

The factors that impact success are pre-existing health conditions[2] and the location of the missing tooth.

Pre-existing Conditions:

  • Smokers[3]
  • Diabetes
  • Hemophilia
  • Immune deficiencies
  • Rare instances of chronic bruxism

As I have noted in other articles the value of implants is significant with respect to bone retention and actual functionality, and they are not susceptible to the formation of cavities.  So as long as one engages in good oral hygiene, i.e. brushing, flossing, and regular hygiene procedures, the chances of inflammation or swelling of the tissues surrounding the implant should be avoidable.

Key factors in minimizing dental implant complications are the selection of an experienced prosthodontist and periodontist (or oral surgeon) who specialize in implant dentistry, careful pre-operative treatment planning and proper after-care and oral hygiene.   One of the benefits of our Sandy Springs multi-specialist practice is everything is under one roof including periodontal after-care.  If you would like to know whether you are a candidate for implants please feel free to call for a free consultation.

[1] The success rate for upper jaw implants is lower because the upper jaw is less dense than the lower jaw, making the success of implantation and osseo-integration slightly more difficult to achieve.

Invisible Orthodontics

clear-correctEverybody wants a great smile, but sometimes we need a little help. Not to worry, more and more people are reaching success with clear orthodontic aligners from Clear Correct.   Traditional Braces use brackets connected by wires to encourage teeth to move, while Clear Correct aligners are a series of tight-fitting custom-made retainers that slip over the teeth. They’re made from a clear plastic or acrylic material and fit tightly over the teeth, but can be removed for eating, brushing, and flossing. You’ll get a new aligner every few weeks to continue moving your teeth into the desired position.

In our Sandy Springs office we use them for cosmetic purposes to achieve the right smile. Clear orthodontic aligners are typically used for patients who have mild or moderately crowded teeth, or have minor spacing issues.  Because the invisible aligners are custom-built for a tight fit, they are best for adults or teens.
