There are two types of dentistry today.  One is traditional dentistry targeting the oral hygiene and prevention of oral diseases, tooth decay, etc., by diagnosis and routine oral treatment.  Its focus is maintenance oriented and a percentage which is covered by insurance.

The other and most recent is cosmetic dentistry, aiming to improve the appearance of your teeth and smile.  And in some instances dental procedures are implemented to improve function, which may have the tertiary effect of improving your smile, i.e. an implant.  Thus, general oral diseases and related health issues are treated by general dental practitioners during the routine care of your oral health.  Whereas cosmetic dentistry should be handled by a dental specialist, whether it is a prosthodontist, orthodontist or an oral surgeon/periodontist in conjunction with a prosthodontist.

Cosmetic dentistry, while it is not a recognized dental specialty, has risen to an art form in the field of dentistry.  When applied in conjunction with the restorative benefits of general dentistry like dental fillings fall within the domain of general dentistry but crosses over into cosmetics when the materials of the restoration serve two purposes; the filling itself and the appearance of the filling.  Thus a composite dental filling is covered by cosmetic dentistry to retain your look and smile as usual, but avoids the unsightliness of an amalgam (mercury filling).

There are many dental clinics and general practitioners providing a myriad of cosmetic dentistry procedures.  Before opting for treatment, one needs to take care in selecting the right type of dentist with investigation that should include references, reviews, training and the skill set for the treatment as well as the particular procedure and protocol to be followed.  In metro cities like Atlanta one can find many dentists who purport to be trained (or have trained themselves) as cosmetic dentists, which is a self-proclaimed non-existent specialty.  These dental clinics and practitioners are providing general dentistry as well as cosmetic dentistry that range from performing root canal treatment, periodontal treatment, children’s dentistry, teeth whitening, bleaching and advanced cosmetic dentistry such as the placing of implants.  Purported cosmetic dentists providing various cosmetic procedures as well as surgeries like full mouth rehabilitation, tooth laminates, tooth veneers, crowns, bridges, etc., can make a mess of your mouth if you’re not careful.

Buckhead Dentist: Success Rates of Dental Implants

Dental implants are among the most successful procedures in dentistry.  But I have to say that over 30 years of restoring them creates insight that most dentist don’t have. Given the complexity of the procedure, there are many variables that can play into its success rate, which is why you should consider our practice for your implant and restoration..

The studies show a five-year success rate of 95 percent for lower jaw implants and 90 percent for upper jaw implants, but these statistics are improved with prosthodontic trained dentists.

The success rate for upper jaw implants is lower because the upper jaw is less dense than the lower jaw, making the success of implantation and osseointegration slightly more difficult to achieve.  The lower posterior implantation has the highest success rate for all dental implants because of greater bone density.

My experience has determined other factors that have an impact on success, such as pre-existing dental or general health conditions or the position of the replaced tooth.  The most common reason for failure is the inability to properly osseo-integrate.  The design is critical to the degree that most dentists don’t understand why they fail.  The actual failure of the implant may be the result of poor positioning of the crown or over torqueing in the bone.  And while infrequent, dental implants may break or become infected or crowns may become loose the same way your natural teeth becomes loose.

Smokers statistically face a higher risk of implant failure. Given how expensive implants can be, one risks wasting money on dental implants if you can’t give up the habit. Other high risk candidates are patients with diabetes, hemophilia or immune deficiencies and rare instances, patients with chronic bruxism.

As I have noted in other articles the value of implants is significant with respect to bone retention and actual functionality, and they are not susceptible to the formation of cavities.  So as long as one engages in good oral hygiene, i.e. with brushing, flossing, and regular hygiene procedures, the chances of inflammation or swelling of the tissues surrounding the implant should be avoidable.  This disease is similar to periodontitis around one natural tooth, and thus requires a similar approach to good oral hygiene.

Key factors in minimizing dental implant complications are the selection of an experienced prosthodontist and periodontist (or oral surgeon) who specialize in implant dentistry, careful pre-operative treatment planning and proper after-care and oral hygiene.   One of the benefits of a multi-specialist practice like ours is everything is under one roof including periodontal after-care.  If you would like to know whether you are a candidate for implants please feel free to call for a free consultation.

Dentist Sandy Springs: How Much does it cost to get your teeth cleaned?

So you see an offer of $49.95 for a teeth cleaning, exam & x-ray come through your mailbox or on your Instagram account.  Is it a lost leader?   Is it a loss leader used to get you in and pressure you into other dental procedures?

If it’s a new practice, then providing discounted services is one of the few methods a new practice has to introduce itself to the surrounding community, no different than a new restaurant trying to showcase its menu.  The genuine intent is to build a relationship by showcasing the practice.  If it’s a mature practice, then there is probably going to be pressure to accept other services.

A teeth cleaning is going to range somewhere around $65 to $89.[1] Often dental insurance will cover some or all of the cost of at least two.  The doctor’s oral exam is  $45 to $55 and the 4 basic bite wing x-rays are around $59 to $72.  Depending on your insurance this might be covered anywhere from 60 to 100% after a small deductible is met.   Periodic X-rays ($32 -$135) are needed to see if any problems are developing inside the teeth or around the jaw bone, and are generally required before cleaning the teeth of a new patient (which is why some practices offer coupons to defray the initial cost of a first visit). Usually this is covered by dental insurance.

Your main goal should be to prevent gum disease, which if not examined and treated when necessary will result in greater costs, including tooth loss.  Dental hygiene is imperative, and cleaning your teeth is the first step towards preserving them.

This is where you run into problems with ‘couponing dentists’. Often that coupon patient is pressured into being that scaling and root planing patient.

Dentist Roswell: How Much do Dental Crowns Cost?

Dental crowns cost anywhere between $900.00 and $1600.00 each depending on the tooth to be restored. In addition, the cost will vary depending on materials, complexity and the dentist’s training and experience and to some degree the location of the practice.  Insurance may pay part of a crown’s cost if it’s obviously needed for medical reasons, but usually crowns are covered only on a limited basis per year.  Depending on the customers’ needs and wishes, partial and full crowns made of various materials may be utilized.  Crowns are made of gold, porcelain, resin or porcelain-fused-to-non-precious-metal.  A tooth-shaped cap (the crown) covers the entire surface of a tooth, adding strength, durability and stability. This usually requires two office visits; first to prepare the tooth, make an impression and install a temporary crown. The impression is sent to a dental laboratory which is seated during the second appointment.

There’s often an initial office visit ($65-$102) and X-rays ($85-$135).  One must not forget that there are additional costs that contribute to the overall price involved in crowns, aside from the material and type of crown chosen which are beyond the patient’s control.  A large share of undervalued costs goes toward the treatment itself, lab and production costs for the crown, aftercare and the like.

Dental care on a whole is often thought to be expensive, but with proper care a crown may last 10 or more years.  Depending upon the general wear and tear a crown is exposed to and how well you keep your teeth free of plaque, it could last indefinitely.  With somewhere between 10 and indefinitely, the investment becomes rather modest, if not inexpensive.

Addicted to Soda

Notice the Acid enamel erosion!

Whoa, hard to believe! But the consumption of soda can cause similar damage like the illegal use of drugs such as methamphetamines or crack cocaine.   The tooth erosion can occur from the acid found in soda.  According to the study conducted by the peer-reviewed clinical journal of the Academy of General Dentistry, researchers found the same type and severity of damage from tooth erosion in each of the participants.

Obviously, in order to have the same effect, a significant amount of soda has to be consumed.  Nonetheless, the effects are similar and need to be conscious of.

And our recommendation to patients is minimize the intake of soda and consume more water.  If you can’t stop drinking soda, don’t brush immediately afterwards because you could damage your teeth enamel.  Rather chew xylitol based sugarless gums or rinse with water to remove the acid agents left behind by soda.
