Dentist Sandy Springs: ADA Recognized “Cosmetic Dentist” is a Prosthodontist

Cosmetic dentist near meMore and more dentists are calling themselves ‘cosmetic dentists’ when there is no cosmetic specialty in dentistry.   Regardless of this claim, the fact remains that the majority of dentists are general dentists who press the envelope of ethics by calling themselves ‘cosmetic dentists’.  Not one of them has an American Dental Association sanctioned ‘cosmetic specialty’ in dentistry.

Those dentists who make the claim do so by self-proclamation.  The American Dental Association (ADA) recognizes nine (9) post dental degree specialties and cosmetic dentistry IS NOT one of them.

These ADA specialties are:

Dental Public Heath, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology and Surgery, Orthodontics, Endodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, and the least known, the PROSTHODONTIST.

Prosthodontics: (crown, bridge, and implants) According to Forbes Magazine, a prosthodontist is the rarest dental specialty in the country.  The rigorous program creates a dental specialty license pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes.  That’s a mouth full, pun intended. The prosthodontist is trained at an ADA approved university to create the smile that implements the use of veneers, crowns, bridges and the new standard of care, dental implants, to ensure that the right smile is achieved, both functionally and aesthetically.

If anyone has a specialty in cosmetic dentistry or has the right to call themselves a ‘cosmetic dentist’, it would be the ADA recognized prosthodontist.  And of the 170 thousand dentists in the U.S., less than two (2%) percent are trained prosthodontists.  So when you are seriously looking for a cosmetic dentist, look for a prosthodontist.

Dr. Scheinfeld received her prosthodontics degree from Emory University School of Dentistry in 1988.  Her prosthodontics’ instructor, Dr. E. Neal Kopp practiced with her for 14 years until his passing in 2008.

In addition to prosthodontics, our practice provides in-house endodontics, general dentistry and implants.  If we can be of service contact us for your complimentary consult.

Dentist Sandy Springs: Don’t Take Chances with Chipped Teeth

Sandy Springs dentist near meIn the movies, a simple pratfall usually gets a big laugh, and a resulting chipped tooth can have the audience rolling in the aisles. But in real life, a chipped tooth due to trauma is no laughing matter. Besides possible pain and damage, a chipped tooth can cause a lot of embarrassment.

If you have a chipped tooth, you’re not alone! In fact, chipped teeth are the most common dental injury today. While a chipped tooth can range in terms of size and damage, any type of dental trauma deserves immediate attention. Although a small chip will most likely not cause pain, you should contact a dentist to make sure there is no other damage to the tooth’s structure. A dentist will be able to rule out accompanying cracks or internal dental problems when examining your chipped tooth.

More significant damage should definitely not be ignored! A broken tooth may result in an exposed nerve, which can cause a great deal of pain. A completely knocked-out tooth can actually be saved if you act quickly. Regardless of your dental emergency, contact your dentist right away.

If we can be of service, please do not hesitate to contact our office.  Serving Metro Atlanta, including Chamblee, East Cobb, Buckhead, Roswell, Alpharetta, Johns Creek, Dunwoody, Vinings and Smyrna.

Dentist Dunwoody: A Beautiful Smile Is Precious And Priceless

Cosmetic dentist near me in Dunwoody and ChambleeDid you realize the shape, shade, length and spacing of your teeth could significantly affect your smile? And our smiles can greatly affect our self-esteem and confidence. Common conditions that impact negatively on your smile include broken, cracked or worn teeth, discolored teeth, missing teeth, crooked teeth, decayed teeth, gaps between your teeth and/or “gummy smiles.” The good news is with modern technology and improved materials, these situations can be dramatically changed to create natural looking and long-lasting beautiful smiles.

Each patient and each specific circumstance must be evaluated on its own merits. Factors such as occlusion [bite], oral habits, available space, health of the gum tissue, severity of the problem and patient expectation must be taken into consideration while planning your cosmetic makeover.

Depending on the situation, there are a variety of choices that all result in excellent esthetic outcomes. For whiter natural teeth, in-office or at-home bleaching [whitening] techniques are available. Repairing teeth or closing spaces may be accomplished with tooth-colored composite resin bonding, porcelain veneers or porcelain crowns.

These procedures vary in time and cost and have differences in longevity and appearance. If you’re not satisfied with your smile or want to learn if you’re a good candidate for any of these remarkable techniques, call our office for a complimentary cosmetic consultation.

Sandy Springs | Chamblee: Cosmetic Dentists, what?

Chamblee Sandy Springs dentist near meThe trend these days is dentists calling themselves cosmetic dentists, regardless of the fact there is no such specialty in dentistry.   To the contrary of this trend, all dentistry is cosmetic.   I don’t know anyone who took the ‘ugly’ teeth class in dental school.  Regardless, the fact remains that the majority of dentist are general dentist, and marketing themselves as ‘cosmetic dentists’ is an ethics violation of the ADA[1].   Their undergraduate degrees are either a DDS or DMD as result.

Not one of them has a ‘cosmetic specialty’ in dentistry because it doesn’t exist.   The ADA only has recognized nine (9) post dental degree specialties and cosmetic dentistry is not one of them.  These specialties range in one to six years of advance training beyond dental school that results in additional certifications considered experts within their fields of dentistry.  These ADA specialties are:

Dental Public Heath, Oral and Maxillofacial Pathology, Radiology and Surgery, Orthodontics, Endodontics, Pediatric Dentistry, Periodontics, and the least known, but the closest to what would be considered a cosmetic dentist, Prosthodontics.

Prosthodontics: (crown, bridge, and implants) A Prosthodontist has a dental specialty license pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes. Most dentists are not trained prosthodontic graduates of a dental school – rather they take short continuing education and utilize trial and error experience to be able to understand how size, shape, color and symmetry all work together to create what a prosthodontists is trained in their post graduate work.   On the other hand, the prosthodontist is trained at a university to create the smile that implements the use of veneers, crowns, bridges and the increasingly more common procedure of dental implants to ensure that the right smile is achieved, both functionally and aesthetically beautiful.  If anyone has a specialty in cosmetic dentistry, it would be the prosthodontist.  So when you are seriously looking for a cosmetic dentist, look for a prosthodontist.

If you are in need of a cosmetic dentist[2], we are here to serve you.
