The field of orthodontics made a quantum leap with a technique for removable clear aligners developed in 1997, and today it is absolutely possible to straighten teeth with nearly invisible appliances. The use of clear aligners involves the application of a series of incrementally different aligners for top and bottom teeth that are similar in appearance to whitening trays. Aligners are typically changed every two to four weeks, and each new set is designed to gradually shift teeth into place.  Our practice generally focuses on cosmetic Orthodontic Tooth Movement (OTM), so most of our treatment plans last somewhere around 6 to 8 months.

Obviously, the treatment success depends heavily on your compliance. Patients are generally happier with aligners because they’re nearly invisible and can be taken out for brushing and eating. What’s most important is the aligners must be worn 20 to 22 hours per day for treatment to remain on track.

Limited-objective orthodontics meets the aesthetic demands and quality of cosmetic dentistry we time and time again seek in our practice.  The concept of “Contemporary Orthodontics” is a useful tool of limited outcome orthodontics for adult patients. It has recently been rebranded and commonly referred to as short-term orthodontics because it can usually be accomplished in 12 months or less.

The entire process of using clear aligners has been developed by specialist orthodontists to be delivered by general dentists. Short-term orthodontics was never meant to be a substitute for full (or comprehensive) orthodontics.  Rather, it is an extension of cosmetic dentistry and an aesthetic alternative to veneers and crowns.

Preferring to move teeth rather than brandish a hand-piece, I use removable aligners to reach comparable aesthetic results.  It is rewarding to create great aesthetic results and save patients from having heavily prepped teeth restored with porcelain crowns or veneers and the resulting problems that may occur with these treatments. With cosmetic orthodontics, I look forward to seeing our patients. It is enjoyable to see how treatment unfolds, critically appraise cases and decide on our next course of action to bring our treatment plan to fruition.
